An Update on Airloupe's AppSumo Lifetime Deals

AppSumo Deals from the Previous Owner.

Adrien Villez·September 28, 2026

We know this has been on a lot of people's minds, and we want to give everyone the full story in one place, rather than continuing to explain it one conversation at a time.

Where we started.

Airloupe wasn't originally built by the team running it today and didn't start as a business. It began during COVID as a solo developer's side project — a simple way to post drone photography online and share it with a few people. Nobody was thinking about pricing tiers, server costs at scale, or what would happen if the hobby actually took off. It was built for fun, not built to last.

That origin explains a lot about what came later, including the lifetime AppSumo deal. It wasn't a calculated business decision so much as an extension of that same 'let's see what happens' spirit — offered without a clear picture of where the platform would need to go, or what it would actually cost to keep growing. It solved a short-term problem, but no business can survive indefinitely on terms it was never built to sustain.

When we took over the platform, it was headed toward being shut down entirely. We made the decision to step in and keep it alive, because we believed — and still believe — that Airloupe is worth continuing to build.

Why the lifetime deals had to go.

Three years where AppSumo lifetime members got real, substantial value: free photo hosting for their galleries, well beyond what a short-lived promotion would have offered. If anything, the deal ran longer than it probably should have, even after it was on the path to abandonment.

The lifetime deal was made without a clear picture of where the platform needed to go. It solved a short-term problem but left no room for what Airloupe would actually cost to run and grow — and no business can survive indefinitely on terms it was never built to sustain. The AppSumo lifetime plans offered unlimited, very large amounts of image hosting for a single one-time payment. That kind of commitment simply isn't sustainable to honor indefinitely — the storage costs alone grow every month, and forever.

To be clear: we didn't receive any of that original revenue ourselves. Those lifetime purchases were sold by the platform's previous owner, and that money went to them, not to us — we inherited the obligation without inheriting the funds behind it. And this wasn't a case of the previous owner offering these deals as a last resort to keep the business afloat; honoring unlimited storage commitments like this long-term was never something any version of this business could actually sustain.

Continuing to honor them indefinitely would have meant permanently limiting what we could invest back into the platform — the servers, the performance work, the new features — for everyone, lifetime deal holder or not. We had a choice between keeping a small set of very underpriced legacy plans alive, or investing in the platform's long-term future. We chose the future.

How we handled it.

Emails about the change of ownership were sent and we worked with AppSumo to make sure lifetime deal holders weren't left without options. AppSumo ran a full refund window for affected customers, open for a month, and it has since closed.

Keeping Airloupe alive and improving — rather than shutting it down — meant the lifetime deals couldn't stay. We understand that's a disappointing outcome if you were one of the people affected, and we don't take that lightly. But we stand behind the decision: a platform that's here, actively getting better, and worth using is better for everyone than one that quietly disappears to keep an unsustainable promise alive.
